Getting Started

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you along the way:

  • 2x6 Wood Planks (appropriate for outdoor/garden use)

  • Concrete Planter Wall Blocks

  • Trellis Arches

  • Rebar or something similar

  • Hammer

  • Saw (optional)

  • Spray Paint (optional)

Decide on the size and layout of your garden beds. Consider the available space, sunlight exposure, and the types of plants you want to grow. I bought 12' long 2x6 planks, so I cut the planks down to have one 3ft. piece and one 9ft. piece making my garden beds 3x9 feet and not have any waste.

The concrete planter wall blocks are from Lowe's. They came tan, but I wanted them black to match my color scheme and have them stand out from the wood color.

So I used BEHR® spray paint from Home Depot to paint them all black once I had them stacked up.

Place the blocks where you want your corners and the distance apart.

Cut your wood planks if needed — I used a circular saw to do this.

Slide the planks in the grooves of the blocks.

Once you have everything exactly where you want it. Use a hammer to pound in the rebar. The rebar should go at least 4 inches into the ground to keep the blocks in place.

If you're using arches, like I did, assemble the arches and place one end inside the garden bed. Then build the second garden bed accordingly so the other end of the arch is inside it also.

Layered Raised Bed Garden Fill

  1. Cardboard

  2. Branches

  3. Compost (I used a mixture of grass clippings from the local compost site and Snowball's Special Blend [our bet rabbit's] pecial poo mixture and all natural litter)

  4. Top Soil

  5. Raised Garden Bed Soil (from Menards) ... I didn't finish filling mine yet, I have to buy the good soil!
