DIY Roman Clay Fireplace Texture

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

I'm overjoyed with the Roman Clay Fireplace Texture! It's exactly what I was looking for to achieve a concrete look, and it has made my project so much more affordable and convenient. The application process was enjoyable and fulfilling, and I couldn't believe how much money I saved compared to other options like tile or stone. The texture blends flawlessly with the wood accents around my fireplace without being too extravagant. I'm beyond thrilled with how fantastic it looks!

I got my inspiration here on Pinterest. You can find the directions on her website or direct from Portola Paints.

Roman Clay

Portola’s Roman Clay is an eco-friendly plaster finish ideal for smooth interior walls. Applied using a putty knife, Roman Clay provides a versatile finish able to achieve a wide range of stone, stucco and marble-like effects, making it a perfect fit in both traditional and contemporary settings.

This decorative clay based plaster is made from natural ingredients, is virtually zero VOC, and lends a rustic originality to interior surfaces. Roman Clay is smooth to the touch with a modeling marble-like effect, comparable to Venetian plasters but with a more subtle, organic appeal.

Achieve a natural, ultra low sheen finish by leaving the final coat unsanded or add a protective seal and slight sheen with Portola’s Roman Clay Topcoat. They have different recommendations for topcoats, but I ended up using Modern Master's Dead Flat Varnish from Amazon as I didn't want any sheen.

Roman Clay is available in a broad range of standard and custom colors.

Electric Fireplace

I chose to go with an electric fireplace because it was the most affordable option for me. Since my fireplace is not on an exterior wall, it would have cost more for venting and hookups to go with gas, and I didn't want the work of a real wood burning fireplace.

I still wanted to create a cozy atmosphere and have a mantle for decorating and hanging stockings. Electric fireplaces provided me with the perfect solution for my needs.

I bought the electric fireplace from Amazon, of course.

The walls flanking the fireplace are basswood stained with Varathane Ebony stain in vertical shiplap. LOVE! My dad did an amazing job hand crafting the shiplap, while my mom sanded and I stained. We later applied linseed oil as a protective topcoat.

The mantle is a solid chunk of white oak, while the other floating shelves match the kitchen floating shelves in natural knotty alder.

I love decorating for fall and have lots of decor, but I feel like my shelves to the right might be a bit too cluttered...but oh well. ;)
