DIY Boot Rack for Winter Mudroom Organization

Updated: Jan 1

I had so much fun completing this much-needed DIY project — and quick and easy enough to crank out on a Tuesday evening! I was able to efficiently finish it using leftover scrap wood from previous house projects and only had to buy 1" round wood dowels from Home Depot. It was such a satisfying experience to clean up my disaster of a mudroom!

The hardest part was figuring out the size and spacing of the dowels. Since I'm a graphic designer, I did all that on the computer to make my plan ahead of time. My boot rack ended up being 38" long by 14" wide to hold 8 pairs of boots — 5" spacing between dowels. The taller dowels on the back are 16" high and the shorter dowels in front are 10" high.

After a full day of sitting at a computer at work, it's really satisfying to get active and dusty and use some power tools!

Embarrassing BEFORE pictures...

Believe it or not, only 2 people live here, LOL — but 2 women! So LOTS of coats, shoes, purses and bags. The other problem is Wisconsin weather. One day it's 20° and the next day it's 48°, which around here still calls for a fall jacket, not a winter one...so I have ALL the coats out and not tucked away in the "off-season" closet on the right. And with winter weather, you need the snow pants, hats, mittens and everything else too. So I found a couple baskets to help organize those also, one for me and one for Ava.

Much better AFTER picture...

I still need to work on the shelf decorations — not loving what I have going there — basically just whatever I had left after decorating the rest of the house. So need to fix that before everyone comes over for the holidays. But at least now you can see and sit on the bench. :)

UPDATE: redid the shelf decor...MUCH BETTER NOW!

Also bought a modern full length mirror so we can make sure we look good before we head out the door! ;)
